There are many rules and guidelines for writing student dissertations. There you can find a lot of different information on how to write your thesis, what words to use and which should be avoided, what dissertation structure is appropriate, and how to format your bibliography.

Many student dissertation writing guidelines contain some information on common mistakes, but these notes are quite brief and uncoordinated. However, it can be helpful to keep in mind the most common mistakes made in student dissertations. 

1. It is even quite odd, but colloquial language, phrasal verbs and contractions can be still found in student dissertations. Do remember to use academic language in your thesis.
2. There is another extreme: some student dissertations are overcomplicated. Students try to use “smart” words, terminology and structures. You should make sure that your thesis is written in plain words.
3. Perhaps, students are afraid of being accused of plagiarism and try to use as little reference as possible. However, you should remember that student dissertations should be based on thorough background knowledge revealed in bibliography.
4. Sometimes students hurry to reveal their ideas on paper and make many grammar and stylistic mistakes. Students often fail to proofread their academic masterpiece, so even creative and informative student dissertations are spoiled by silly mistakes. 
5. Sometimes student dissertations are spoiled by too much contemplation. For instance, some students focus on how they obtained their results, instead of concentrating on their results.

Of course, every student dissertation can contain some specific drawback, but mistakes mentioned above are the most wide-spread. If you keep them in mind, you will be able to avoid them in your thesis.
